The inaugural event in 2008 attracted 20 world-class BBQ teams, and 29 teams competed in 2009. We expect the number of teams to climb again in 2010, so get your entry in early to make sure there's room! For the 2010 event we have many teams already registered, and it should make for a great competition. Our competing teams in 2010 so far included (more to come):

A total of $6,000 in prize money was awarded in 2009, broken down as follows:

Grand Champion: $1,900 + trophy
Reserve Grand Champion: $1,135 + special prize
Overall Third: $175 + trophy
Overall Fourth: $125 + ribbon
Overall Fifth: $100 + ribbon
Overall Sixth: $80 + ribbon
Overall Seventh: $75 + ribbon
Overall Eighth: $50 + ribbon
Overall Ninth: $35 + ribbon
Overall Tenth: $25 + ribbon

In all four divisions (pork, ribs, chicken & brisket), the following prizes were given in 2009:
First Place: $200 + trophy
Second Place: $100 + trophy
Third Place: $75 + trophy
Fourth Place: $50 + ribbon
Fifth Place: $40 + ribbon
Sixth Place: $35 + ribbon
Seventh through Tenth Places: Ribbon

We promise that the competing teams will love our “Monks,” their personal event assistants who will cater to their every whim! We provide terrific entertainment through the weekend, and we take care of our teams! In addition to the competition cooking and KCBS-sanctioned judging for the four categories, we also throw in several other entertaining little side attractions, including:

Monastery Mystery ($75.00 1st Place prize; ribbons for 2nd & 3rd)

The Monastery Mystery contest will again be open only to BBQ cooking contestants (one entry per team). The Holy Smoke Showdown will provide all Monastery Mystery contestants with the same three mystery ingredients, and contestants will then prepare a dish “entirely on site” using all portions of the three mystery ingredients. Additional ingredients could be added, and ingenuity is definitely a key ingredient. KCBS rules “do not” apply to this special presentation.

Smokin’ Salsa Contest ($75.00 1st Place prize; ribbons for 2nd & 3rd)

The Smokin’ Salsa contest will again be open to the general public. One entry fee will allow one batch of salsa to be entered for judging on Friday. Salsa will not be required to be prepared “on site.” Your Smokin’ Salsa entry fee will include one (1) free BBQ Showdown event entry pass on Friday only.

‘Creatures of Habit’ BBQ Sauce Contest ($75.00 1st Place prize; ribbons for 2nd & 3rd)

The BBQ sauce contest is open to the general public. One sauce dish per $15 entry fee. Same contest conditions as in Smokin’ Salsa Contest. Entries must be submitted for judging Friday afternoon, June 12 (exact times to be announced). See Contestant Rules for more information.

‘Sweet Confessions’ Dessert Contest ($75.00 1st Place prize; ribbons for 2nd & 3rd)

The dessert contest is open to the general public. One dessert dish per $15 entry fee. Same contest conditions as in Smokin’ Salsa Contest. Entries must be submitted for judging Friday afternoon, June 12 (exact times to be announced). See Contestant Rules for more information.

Weenie Dog Races

The Third Annual Weenie Dog Race will be held Saturday (June 12) at 6:30 pm. The Weenie Dog Race is open to the general public, and only for Dachshund breed of dogs. Make sure you get there early to get your dog entered, and to find a good spot along the race track to watch your favorite hound run for the ribbons! See more info on the Weenie Dog page!

Kid’s Q - $15.00 entry ($50.00 First Place Prize)

The Kid’s Q contest will be held Friday, June 11, 2010. There will be two age divisions: 10 years and under and 11-15 years old. The kid’s cook meeting will be at 4 pm with turn-in at 6:30 pm. Grills will be supplied by the event. Cooking must be completed in the designated area. Grown-up assistance must be limited. Parents or adult representative must be present during entire cooking process. KCBS rules apply. Kids can cook anything. Be creative!
